LETTERS, numbers and conundrums were no match for Paul James.

The Brampton man took them all on when he appeared on the quiz show Countdown, this summer.
He won the maximum number of eight games in a row which entitled him to go on to the series’ championships.
He won both his quarter and semi finals.
And yesterday evening viewers saw him take the title and crowned the champion of series 67.
“I have been watching Countdown more or less since it started in 1982, when I came home from school,” a delighted Paul said.
The 42-year-old, who is married and has two step-children, had a unique system that allowed him to constantly achieve high word scores in the letters part of the game, where contestants pick nine characters and get extra points for using as many as possible.
“I just write the words in a circle in front of me and I can actually see them.”
Paul also managed to get several conundrums – anagrams of nine-letter words.
Since he started watching the programme while a pupil at William Howard School he has been able to solve them. “I think they are a bit more difficult today,” he said.
However, the numbers game provided a few more challenges.
In this round, the contestants are given six figures and a three-figure target they have to calculate in 30 seconds using them.
The numbers are mostly between one and 10, but four multiples of 25 are also available.
“I didn’t want six small ones,” Paul joked.
However, he was extremely impressed with the abilities of Rachel Riley, the programme’s numbers queen, who works out the results.
He also liked the general atmosphere of the programme, saying there is a good family feeling there.
The show was filmed in Granada Studios, in Manchester.
His prize is the full 20-volume version of the Oxford English Dictionary, as well as a crystal trophy.
Paul believes he is the first Cumbrian to win the title.
